privacy policy
this policy says what grät collects, why, and what you can do about it. it is written to be read.
who we are
grät is operated by the grat network llc, newport beach, california ("grät", "we"). this policy covers the grät app for iphone and android, the grät web app, and thegrat.net.
what we collect
- your account: a handle, your name, your email address, and a password. we store the password in hashed form, never as typed.
- your profile: what you choose to add: a photo, a bio, interests, and a place name.
- your gräts: the subject and words you write, and any photo, video or voice recording you attach. if you tap to add a place, the app reads your location once and keeps the city and region as a label; it does not keep your coordinates.
- who you send to: the member you address, or, for someone not on grät yet, the name and the email address or phone number you pick for them.
- your contacts, on your device only: if you allow it, the app searches your contacts on your phone to let you pick a recipient. your contact list is not uploaded. only the one recipient you choose is sent to us, with your grät.
- notifications: if you turn them on, a device token so we can deliver them.
- join requests on thegrat.net: the email address you enter, the time, and your ip address, kept in a file only we can read, and a copy emailed to hello@thegrat.net.
- technical records: our servers keep ordinary request logs (such as ip address, time, and the request made) to run and secure the service.
how we use it
- to deliver your gräts and show them to the people you send them to.
- to show your profile and your public gräts to other members, and to anyone who opens a share link to a public grät.
- to notify you when someone sends you a grät or responds to yours.
- to invite someone you thanked who is not on grät yet, by email or text, in your name.
- to keep the service running, secure, and free of abuse.
we do not sell your information. we do not run advertising, and we do not use your data for advertising.
public and private
a grät is public by default: other members can see it, and anyone with its link can read it. you can mark a grät private when you write it, and a grät to yourself is always private. your handle and profile are visible to members.
who else sees it
we use service providers to run grät: hosting for our servers and media, and apple's and expo's push services to deliver notifications. they process data for us and not for themselves. we may also disclose information when the law requires it, or to protect grät, its members, or others.
keeping and deleting
we keep your account and gräts while your account is open. when you delete your account in settings, your account closes and your profile stops being shown. gräts you already sent stay with the people you sent them to, the way a letter does. to ask for a full erasure, or for a copy of your data, write to hello@thegrat.net from the email on your account.
security
traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted. passwords are hashed. no system is perfect; if we learn of a breach that affects you, we will tell you.
children
grät is for people 13 and older. we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. if you believe a child has an account, write to us and we will remove it.
changes
if this policy changes in a way that matters, we will post the new version here with a new date, and tell members in the app.
